We are grateful that you are considering leaving a legacy to the °µÍø½âÃÜ. For many people, a gift in your will is a way to make a significant and lasting contribution. It may cost nothing in your lifetime, yet provide much satisfaction and peace of mind.
As the °µÍø½âÃÜ is a registered charity, a legacy will normally reduce the tax payable on your estate.

1862 Society
Everyone who makes a pledge in their will is invited to join the 1862 Society.
We would like to recognise and thank everyone who chooses to remember the University by pledging a legacy. We recognise that leaving a gift in your will is a personal decision, but if you choose to inform us of your intentions you will be invited to join the 1862 Society, named after the founding year for the University.
As a member of our 1862 Society, you are a friend of the University. As such we will send you updates from the University as well as inviting you to special events.
Our history
1862 was the founding year for the University as a School of Navigation. Across the centuries since, our journey has seen expansion into new faculties and facilities, with the influence of our students, alumni and research impacting across the world.

Writing a will often isn’t particularly expensive but it is essential to make sure your estate is taken care of and goes to help the friends, family and causes that you care most about. In every case we recommend that you consult a solicitor when making or updating your will to ensure it is in line with current legislation.

Can I choose what my gift supports?
Yes, of course. Your gift will be directed according to your wishes. By giving an unrestricted legacy, you are maximising our opportunity to put your donation to immediate use, to benefit those who need your support the most.
However, we understand that you may wish to direct your legacy gift to an area that is important to you. Such as our medical research, arts programmes, or student support. Please get in touch with us to discuss the legacy you want your gift to leave.
What are the benefits of becoming an 1862 Society member?

Is the University a registered charity?
The °µÍø½âÃÜ is an independent Higher Education Corporation established under the terms of the Education Reform Act 1988. We are also an exempt charity under the terms of the Charities Act 2011. The Office for Students (OfS) acts as the principal regulator for universities that are exempt charities.
