This 20-credit masters-level module focuses on the application of evidence-based practice to professional practice, allowing you to gain the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to utilise the best evidence and avoid information overload. 
This will ensure your practice is underpinned by robust quality evidence while addressing service users’ concerns, expectations and values.
You will develop skills in both the theory and application of evidence-based practice to enable you to take a leadership role in evidence-based practice in your own area of practice.
As part of the module, you will have the opportunity to identify a question relevant to your area of practice, review and critique the literature in this area, and plan and evaluate any necessary change to professional practice.

Course details

On completion of the module, you will be able to
  • demonstrate a critical knowledge of research paradigms, a range of research methodologies relevant to evidence-based practice (EBP), and methods of interpretation of research findings
  • demonstrate a critical understanding of the concepts and tools of EBP, including types of evidence, methods of critical appraisal and use of electronic databases to access evidence
  • demonstrate a critical and in-depth evidence-based knowledge of a chosen field of practice
  • apply knowledge of change theory and implementation strategies to formulate and critically analyse a plan for change in the chosen area of practice.
The module is a core module for all pathways of the MSc Advanced Professional Practice (Health and Social Care Professions) programme within the School of Health Professions and the MClinRes Clinical Research programme.

Entry requirements

You will normally be a healthcare or social care professional with a first degree or a related academic degree (BSc (Hons) at 2:2 or above, or European first cycle equivalent). Overseas students require IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent.

Applying evidence to practice – distance learning

It is also possible to undertake this module via distance learning. 
Module content is the same as the taught version but will be delivered by webinars, interactive teaching resources, Skype tutorials and other digital learning tools.
