The °µÍø½âÃÜ and Babcock International Group have strengthened their collaborative work to drive skills development, innovation and sustainable economic growth.
A new Memorandum of Understanding formalises decades of work into a strategic partnership between two of °µÍø½âÃÜ’s largest employers.
It reflects a shared commitment to growing and diversifying high-quality partnerships, aligned to both organisations’ long-term objectives, while ensuring the wider benefits of defence investment can be felt in the city and across the wider South West.
The new agreement reinforces a connection which has resulted in former °µÍø½âÃÜ students making up the largest number of graduate employees within the current Babcock workforce.
Its key areas of focus include working together to attract students to study in °µÍø½âÃÜ, enhancing the student experience, promoting routes into employment, and addressing skills gaps and future workforce requirements.
The partnership will also see researchers and students from the University working alongside Babcock staff to solve complex technical and industrial challenges, and exploring ways – now and in the future – to attract further investment into the city. It also ensures that the wider benefits of defence investment are felt across the city and its communities.
This builds on existing and successful research and educational collaborations, with recent examples including the development of a co-created module for those wanting to succeed in the nuclear industry – available to University students and Babcock employees – and the creation of a Project Manager Degree Apprenticeship.
The two organisations have also secured joint funding from the Royal Society to deliver a programme of STEM outreach to schools across the South West. This initiative sees the University delivering in-school computer coding programmes, alongside Babcock offering structured work experience opportunities at their Devonport dockyard facility.
